Students complete internal assessments (projects, oral presentations, essays, etc.) and external assessments (exams) that are moderated and evaluated by international examiners. IB’s multi-disciplinary approach encourages students to develop their academic talents, delve into educational inquiry, and study human behavior. In order to receive the IB diploma, students must complete a Theory of Knowledge class, the Extended Essay, and the Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) component. The advanced academic study allows proficiency in languages, science, mathematics, social studies, and fine arts. IB’s broad range of subjects accommodates diverse student interests and intentions. Some IB courses may be taught concurrently with Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Students who successfully complete the challenging two-year program (junior/senior level) may earn college and university credit as well as the IB Diploma. Also, Students can take two IB Science class however, students cannot take both IB Physics and IB Biology SL or Biology HL There is one exception students can take both Psychology SL and Chemistry SL. * Note : Students can take only one of the following courses due to scheduling conflicts: French SL, Chemistry SL, Psychology SL, or Art SL. Group Six : students can take either Visual Arts or an elective your elective choices are: Psychology, French ab initio, or a 2 nd IB Science course. Group Five : the student can take either Math Application and Interpretation SL or Math Analysis and Approaches SL. However, students taking IB Biology HL are not positioned to take IB Physics as a 2nd IB science course. Group Four : students can take up to two of the following IB science courses: Biology SL, Chemistry SL, Physics SL, or Biology HL the 2nd course would meet the requirement for Group Six. Psychology SL can be taken as an elective Psychology can also be taken by students in Biology HL to meet the requirement for Group Three (instead of History HL or Business HL). Group Three : students can take either History HL or Business HL – not both. For students who take two Group One courses (Spanish HL and English HL) French ab initio SL can be be taken to meet the requirement for Group Six. At AST, students who are not f luent in both Spanish and English often take Spanish B HL or Spanish ab initio SL or French ab initio to meet the Group Two requirement. Group Two : one course can be taken, but if a student has 2 Group One courses the requirement to take a Group Two course (see above) is no longer mandatory. When this is done, the student is not mandated to take a Group Two course. Many students at AST take 2 Group One courses (English and Spanish). Group One : a minimum of one course is required. The Group Six component is fulfilled by taking either Visual Arts or an elective your elective choices are: Psychology, French ab initio, or a 2 nd IB Science course. The Group Two component can be replaced with a 2 nd course taken in Group One. Students must have 3 HL courses and 3 SL courses. Generally speaking, the student is required to take one course from each group.
